I believe it to be because the x86emu is attempting to probe your hardware
to determine your monitor resolutions, scan rates etc and on an AMD64 system
this isn't particularly great (an x86 emulator is used to issue an interrupt
to the video card). When you switch off the Usplash, this step is bypassed
(I'm not too clued up on X so I'm learning as I go) and so you get into X
with your X config file settings.

This is why I've asked to to perform the ddcprobe - I'm just wondering if it
will work correctly and give you valid output back from your card. I suspect
it will but until the probe code is fettled you'll just have to run without
a splash screen.
