Because they are far more powerful than any other thing on earth (but that
doesn't mean they are easy to use) and you can use them from the
command-line. Have your had to log in to a remote server via SSH? If the
server has X11 installed, you can launch KATE but it will be slow. However,
using vim or emacs is fast, very fast, and every flavor of UNIX has, at
least, one of them.
