I already tried making a test user and running firefox there.

Okay, this is ridiculous. I'm running my laptop in single-head mode
at the moment, but xrandr reports

   SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
  *0 3200 x 1200 ( 602mm x 221mm ) *60
   1 1600 x 1200 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   2 1280 x 1024 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   3 1152 x 864 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   4 1024 x 768 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   5 800 x 600 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   6 640 x 480 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   7 640 x 400 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   8 512 x 384 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   9 400 x 300 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   10 320 x 240 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60
   11 320 x 200 ( 602mm x 221mm ) 60

Setting 0 is a dual-head size. When I did xrandr -s 1, firefox
launched fine. Okay, the window was probably on the nonexistent other
screen... but get this: no indicator of firefox would appear in the
task panel as long as a leftover firefox process was running that was
started in the "dual head" mode.

So, problem solved, but I can't understand why I'd be in that
dual-headed mode in the first place. Stuff like this makes me want to
get a mac :/
