Files from camcorder to folder

I have just bought myself my first camcorder and would be most grateful
if someone could point me in the right direction. I want to transfer
video files from the camcorder to a folder for further processing. The
camcorder is a Sony Handycam DCR-HC24E and I am using the Ubuntu 6.06. I
will gladly supply more information if it would help.
