Radeon 7500 and AIGLX on Edgy?

I've a Radeon Mobilty M7 LW aka Radeon 7500. I'd like some eye candy
(drop-shadows, truly translucent windows).

First of all, does anyone have that on this hardware? Is the
performance acceptable?

There are two ways to get the candy: Xgl and AIGLX. Of the two AIGLX
seems easier to set up. I've followed the instructions here:

  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/AIGLXOnEdgy

and my /var/log/Xorg.0.log seems to indicate I have AIGLX:

  (==) AIGLX enabled
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/radeon_dri.so

glxinfo shows that I have direct rendering, and the
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap extension is listed twice (once in 'server
glx extensions', once in 'client glx extensions'). It is not listed
among 'GLX extensions' nor 'OpenGL extensions'. Should it be?

If I try to start compiz, I get this error:

  $ gnome-window-decorator &  compiz --replace gconf &
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
  compiz.real: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz.real: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz.real: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Any ideas? Xorg.0.log is also full of warnings of this kind:

(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x24
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x26
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x28
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x29
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2a
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2c
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2d
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2e
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x30
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x31
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x32

Strangely, the server log file has no claims about not supporting visual
0x4b. According to xdpyinfo the server supports visuals from 0x23
through 0x32, and 0x4b.
