32 Ubuntu on 64 bit AMD CPU, how ?

As a side note, most off the shelf PCs sold in computer stores with
64-Bit prossers have 32-bit Windows XP installed.

Some say 32-bit apps actually run better on 64-bit CPUs (or at least no
worse than on 32-bit).
