~/.bash_profile is for login shells, while ~/.bashrc is for non-login 
shells. It doesn't really have anything to do with gnome-terminal - most 
  X terminal emulators run the shell as a non-login shell. If you really 
want the shell in gnome-terminal to be a login shell, it can be 
configured in the settings.
