Ok, did give compiling a try. That was 1.5 hours ago of downloading
missing packages after ./configure choked on something.
But 'configure' still ends in an error about a package that actually is
installed. it says:
---
checking for gconf-2.0 >= "2.0"... Package gconf-2.0 was not found in
the pkg-co nfig search path. Perhaps you should add the directory
containing `gconf-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gconf-2.0' found
configure: error: Library requirements (gconf-2.0 >= "2.0") not met;
consider ad justing the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your
libraries are in a nons tandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

However, apt-cache search gconf displays:
---

So gconf2 is mentioned. Is the problem that it's not the same name as
expected by GnuCash? ("gconf-2.0") That'd be pretty stupid. It mentions
a PATH however but no clue where this is configured or installed.
Fun.
