Keyboard going crazy

You wouldn't happen to be using a KVM switch would you? I can't get my
Ubuntu box to behave with my Belkin KVM switch. Some day I will have to
switch to USB - I hope they are better.

Don't overlook the obvious:  Alt-F2, gnome-control-center, and check your
settings under Keyboard, especially the typematic (repeat) rate.  

You might also try switching keyboard layouts.

I'd also try another keyboard.
