Livecd distro or alternative required

Hi all,

I hit a bug in the Live CD of ubuntu 6.06 LTS.

I already had a linux on my system and of course, some free space.

When I boot from the live CD, it mounts the existing swap partition on
my hard disk.

Then, if I click on install and during partitioning, if I choose to
manually edit partitions, system hangs.

My take is that system hangs cos it unmounts the swap when I choose to
manually edit partitions.

Either the live CD should not mount the existing swap or if it mounts,
it should not try to unmount it.

Regards,
Raghu

why dont you chose linux which can install permanently in your hdd so
you can work there, save linux seting, save your file etc.

Personaly i don't like live cd. First it takes time when booting. Second
we gona loose our seting when computer turn off. third it's slow because
often access cdrom drive.

But if you like to try there are varios live cd distro include ubuntu
dapper which run live cd first before pemanently install. These are
puppy, damnsmall linux, slax, knoppix, etc.

Maybe easytag can help you. It's gui tool, but I found it very powerful
in looking up and assigning several collections of MP3 files that I lost
track of somehow.

If I were planning to keep Ubuntu and dispense with the other two
systems, I'd boot into Ubuntu.

$ sudo grub-install /dev/hda

then

$sudo update-grub (this may be superfluous)

Check the menu.lst:

$ less /boot/grub/menu.lst

and make sure the Ubuntu system is the default.

reboot to check and then deal with the remaining partitions as planned.

Should be there, its under the System menu.
System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

probably. Kept her so far for 26 years. Although, when I turned 50, I
told her I wanted either a mistress or a motor scooter. So far all but
two people recommend the motorscooter. After all, it's far safer, more
consistent ride, can be ignored for months and it will still be there,
can be started easily and is ready to go in minutes. You can even ride
another scooter and not hurt anyone's feelings.

Yes, a scooter (Suzuki Burgman 400) is definitely in my future.

hey, it's no worse than myself when people simply mention anti-spam and
I start going on about proof of work systems. Worse yet, I pull out the

mathematics behind proof for work systems and adoption rates. or when
talking about really simple web frameworks and I start talking about
Akasha.

Boy oh boy, do the eyeballs glaze. Then when I mention I could use some

help, they head for the doors.

can I make it use a Akasha format instead of HTML? (see, what did I
tell you)

how are you at Python and do you have any spare time? :-)

Seriously, I'll have to take the suggestions I've been given, set them
up for her and stand back. ever since the infamous "what do you mean
you can't spell Emacs" incident from the spring of 91, I'm very careful
about when to offer help.

Nope, i only have devices, printing, screens, network and system logs,
no package manager (note, those names might not be exactly the correct
one, it's French version here)

My Edgy system is almost back to normal...save for the following
problem.
This is the output of sudo gdmsetup in a terminal:

Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 2 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 3 of 5.

Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 5 of 5.
  Command failed 5 times, aborting.
Could not access GDM configuration file.

Anybody have any solutions ? I don't think it's a bug as it started
after I used BUM once to check services. I think BUM crashed and it may
have taken something
with it.

Cheers

This is a bit esoteric, but maybe someone has an answer :-)

I have a dual head system (two desktops, not Xinerama). I can start an
OpenOffice application on either desktop by either setting the DISPLAY
variable or using the "-display" option to ooffice2.

BUT: Once one OpenOffice2 window is open, all subsequent windows will
open on the same display. OpenOffice2 seems to pay no further attention
to the DISPLAY variable or to the "-display" command line option. I've
been through all the configurable options I can find in OpenOffice, no
joy.

Does anyone know how I can have one OpenOffice2 window on one display
and another window on another display?

Regards, K.

Yes, we are on the same page. Try it - can you add a new item to the
list displayed? If you can, please tell me how, click by click, because
if it IS possible, it is highly non-obvious to me.

During my experimentation I change the setting for PDF from "use this
plugin/AcroRead 7.0" to "run this program/acroread", and now PDF is not
in the list any more - and I have no way to add it.

The choices I get are download and open with. That's it. No plugins on
offer.

Have a look at Puppy. It is a less than <70MB distro that can boot from
USB stick or CD and save data to the USB stick (or multi session CD).
Also at only 70MB it will load into RAM and therefore run reasonably
fast for a live CD style distro.
