VMware install - Howto

After being unable to get VMware player to install using Synaptic
(it fails while "Starting VMware services") and after much
reading/tinkering I managed to get a virtual machine working (using VMware
player 1.02) on Ubuntu v6.06.

Unfortunately I am unable to get the parallel port printer to work. The
printer works OK from Ubuntu. But the VM player displays a message that it
"Cannot connect virtual device parallel0. No corresponding device is
avalable on the host."

I have the following in my .VXD file:

parallel0.present = "TRUE"
parallel0.fileName = "/dev/parport0"

I have also tried:

parallel0.autodetect = "TRUE"
parallel0.fileName = "/dev/lp0"
parallel0.bidirectional = "TRUE"
parallel0.startConnected = "TRUE"

all give the same result.

 From reading various articles it looks like it may have something to do
with permissions. Like maybe adding the VMware user to the group lp. I am
new to Linux and Ubuntu so I do not know how to change groups and/or
permissions.

So, if you have gotten parport0 to work with VMware player, would you
please let me know what the magic is.

And if anyone would like to give me a step-by-step guide to adding my
VMware user to the group lp, that may help too.

TIA
