How to make info's install-info do more than run ineffectually?

On Ubuntu 5.10, I experience:
$ info -w ld
*manpages*
i.e. info reverts to the manages, for want of an "ld" info page.
Having /usr/local/src/binutils-2.16.1/ld/ld.info to hand, it would be
very handy to make info aware of this. (For the last couple of years,
I've been reading acquired info pages with vim, but info should be able
to do it too.)
On the basis of "man install-info", I've tried
$ sudo install-info --section Development Development /usr/local/src/binutils-2.16.1/ld/ld.info
* Ld: (ld). The GNU linker.
That looks a lot like success, but info remains ignorant of the
attempted update:
$ info -w ld
*manpages*
(And, yes, "info ld" still reverts to the manpage. The info main menu's
Development section is also unchanged.)
Is there something I need to read, other than this advice in the main
menu?:
In Ubuntu, Info `dir' entries are added with the command
`install-info'. Please refer to install-info(8) for usage details.
