edgy broken

After the latest upgrades and after I installed BUM (bad move) Edgy is broken, well badly bent.
I can get to the desktop but my icons are gone as apparently Nautilus won't run. Calling it from a terminal just results in a brief moment of activity, and I end up hitting cntl-c to get the cursor back. I have reinstalled GDM, Nautilus, Nautilus-data and a few other related programs but no joy.

Any ideas ?
