fast answer as I haven't tried this so far: I suspect that startkde is
just a wrapper script to get all of the KDE components up and running in
a pleasant way - and, doing so, possibly ignores the --display command
line option.
Instead of using -- display, try setting the DISPLAY environment
variable in some terminal before doing startkde there:
export DISPLAY=:1 && startkde
