Strange Edgy Problem - disk throughput varies under nautilus to mc markedly

I've just noticed a problem in Edgy here my disk IO in nautilus seems to
be quite slow. A 600MB ISO was going to take 18-19min to copy to a new
directory. I thought this was wrong so I fired up midnight commander in
an xterm (still under X) and it achieved a throughput of over 16MB per
second and did the copy in a couple of minutes. To take caching out of
the equation I picked a different ISO. These images have no errors so it
seems to be purely down to the different programs.

It's only when I used nautilus, Thunar copied (another ISO - Linux Mint
one) in about 70-90 seconds. I'm running Nautilus under Xfce if that
gives any more info.

Here's my hdparm settings for the drive I used (source and dest on the
same partition):
/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  1 (on)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 24321/255/63, sectors = 390721968, start = 0

Any advice on this on where to look or what to tune?

Kind Regards Russell
