You didn't mention which version you're using? 6.06? 6.10? One thing I
would try is to switch to a tty (Alt-F1, F2, etc.) and run top (maybe
top -U username) and see what process is blocking. Kill that process
and then switch to the user. File a bug report...

Sorry I can't be more help. I don't use the feature that much (logging
in and out is so much faster than on Windows that the kids just do
that instead of switching like they used to).
