converting to RAID etc

I am looking to convert a Ubuntu Server 6.10 installation from flat disk 
to RAID + LVM.

It would seem the easiest way is to install a bare-bones Ubuntu Server 
on the new RAID disks and then cp all the files from the flat disk onto 
the RAID setup.

However, I want to be sure that I do not overwrite the RAID / LVM 
configuration.

Can you tell me in which config files the RAID and LVM information is 
stored so that I do not copy over these in the process?
