wireless on an Ubuntu fileserver (no X) - auto connect possible?

Reasonable question, but I did try to make clear in the mail that this
machine has no X (desktop glory) and is very simply a fileserver.
Wireless with network-manager-gnome is a god-send, but I must learn how
to do it myself here. Do you have any idea how to use inits and all
that? It was a struggle for me to follow the instructions of ndiswrapper
(compiling it from source etc) and actually getting connected. Then I
realized it was all for nothing because it gets lost after a reboot and
I can't ssh in, so I have to retrieve the computer from the garage and
start messing about with monitors and keyboards. Grr!
