Thanks for the suggestion but I'm afraid this didn't work for my pc.
What I did come across was on the Ubutnu Forum
(http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=290713) which suggested
adding 'apm power_off=1' in /etc/modules. This seems to have worked so
I'm sorted for now.
