Into the generic kernel that is. The CD only contains the 386.

Install the metapackage linux-686, which will always depend on the
newest actual kernel package + the accompanying "restricted" modules:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/base/linux-686

Or install linux-image-686 to leave out the restricted modules
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/base/linux-image-686
