Do you have totem-gstreamer or totem-xine installed? The 2 versions use
different codec packages. E.g., w32codecs will not be used by
totem-gstreamer, just by totem-xine. To play those formats with
totem-gstreamer, you have to do additional stuff.
Before Dapper, totem-gstreamer was useless for my needs, but now since
Dapper, with gstreamer0.10, totem has played every file I tried so far.

Just FYI, you *can* remove ubuntu-desktop. You just have to make sure to
install it again before upgrading to a new release of Ubuntu. (However,
when you upgrade the recommended way with the Update Manager application
it will take care of this for you)
