I understand the frustration. I spent weeks getting this to work for
seven people (a family, where users *rarely* change). I've not done
this in an office environment, and have since rolled it back to
traditional passwd/shadow files, so I don't have much to offer in the
way of help.
However, there is a proposal to make LDAP much simpler:

Currently it's marked as "low" priority. I would suggest emailing the
people in charge (listed on the right) and maybe help fill out the
related wiki page. Maybe we can raise the project's profile.
