Well, if he's got a Kubuntu CD, then he boots in live mode and knows
immediately if the video works.  However, that's an X issue, not a KDE or
Gnome one, so I don't see that it makes any difference.

Again, that's a kernel issue and not a KDE/Gnome one.

otoh, this works perfectly and has done since the very early days of breezy. 
It _is_ a kubuntu issue.
