I don't know what happened in 6.06 but do you do this from a console in
X?

You can jump to a console by pressing CTRl-ALT-F1 and log in, if you
want to return to X press ALT-F7.
If you really want to get rid of X, go to the console screen login,
become root and type: telinit 3 This will get you into runlevel 3 of
your system.
