/etc/init.d/gdm stop causing system hang

I'm running edgy and for some reason if I issue sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop to
dump to a console, it hangs with just a blinking cursor? I experience the
same even if I kill the process. Is this a bug or has something changed with
that in relation to 6.06?
