new to ubuntu; have a few questions

thanks to all for your comments, suggestions and other help.  i finally
resolved the issues and i'm up and running.  i think i had a bios root kit
and that's the problem. i hated doing what i had to do, but i
<mumbles>reloaded windows</mumbles>.

there will be another day for linux on a new machine and a better
understanding what i need to do initially.
