fetchmail authorization and socket errors

I have traced my mail problems down (with help) to fetchmail errors.

This is from mail.info log:

  * Just before here I noticed that gweather applet wasnt working and
would not update automatically or manually.
  * And then I rebooted.

So I see two errors: socket errors when connecting to gmail and then
authorization errors on my own system.
What would cause this and what can I now do about it?
