As matters stand at the moment, Linux can read ntfs, but not (safely)
write to ntfs. Renaming files obviously involves writing to the file
system...
There is a new method, ntfs-3g, which I believe uses "fuse" to make
writing to ntfs possible, but it is still not sufficiently developed to be
in Ubuntu by default.
http://www.linux-ntfs.org/ is the project's home page.
