module-assistant--does it get run on upgrading kernel?

I'm muddling my way through getting digium wildcard analog telephone
cards working for use with asterisk. While attempting to figure out
how to build the zaptel kernel modules, I discovered that magic that
is module-assistant.
Simply running 'module-assistant auto-install zaptel-source' compiled
the zaptel kernel modules, built the deb package, and installed it
(I'm sure those who are already familiar with module-assistant are not
as easily impressed).
Anyway, my question is whether I should expect that module-assistant
will be run automagically next time a new kernel is installed, or if
I'll have to run it manually.
Thanks!
