Well, it turns out I was using CD-RW discs. I have just burnt a CD-R
disc and voilà, the Alternate Edgy installation has completed successfully!
My only suggestion now is to file a bug against the installer by using

I am going to close this bug.
Now I have a problem with the X server, the same as when booting from the
Edgy Live Desktop CD:
