You're running edgy, presumably.  Mine is dapper, where the kernel is
2.6.15.

I wonder if the upgrade got into the wrong repository?

I get:-

NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 1.0-8776, but this
kernel module has the version 1.0-8762.  Please make sure that this
kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.
