i had a number of programs running when i clicked on the frostwire menu
entry; might just have reached the outer limits of my 512Mb memory?

thanks for the reminder. i don't know why i didn't mention in my
original that i could've sworn it was installed on that machine, as
well, back before i upgraded from dapper to edgy. but it's been more
than 48h, and these days, that's pushing the envelope of my short-term
memory. :c)
anyway, running your suggestion produces:
