A difficult problem to resolve. I've worked around it in Edgy by
explicitly making USB audio devices not grab the default card index. Of
course this breaks audio for people who _want_ USB audio to be default,
but it's easily remedied by removing one line from
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
