maildirs, dovecot, mail client help

I have done a similar thing a few months ago and had endless problems
using evolution in this setup. For my own mail I use mutt, but my wife
uses a GUI-mta.  In the end I have tried evolution, sylpheed and
Thunderbird and decide to use Thunderbird.  Evolution would just hang
after connection to the Imap-server without any error message or
usability. Sylpheed-Claws was too complicated to use.  It seems that
Thunderbird is easy enough and we had no problems with the
Imap-connection.

After trying out Evolution a few times I have decided that it is for
me not usable at all and I would prefer a Desktop without it.
