Well thanks to a mysterious extension, Spell Checking is "broken" in in
Firefox (on my end) at the moment. But I'd swear there's an "add to
dictionary" option when right clicking on a word that's marked as
misspelled.

Firefox uses the myspell dictionary on all platforms. It's which is
independent of either GNOME or KDE. The only other app in
Ubuntu/Kubuntu that uses it (that I'm aware of) is OpenOffice.org.
KDE uses ASpell by default (In Kubuntu anyway) but you can also use
ISpell. Unfortunately, neither is used by Firefox (or Thunderbird).
