It seems that the CD "64-bit PC (AMD64) install CD" is tailored towards AMD?

"For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.".

It installs but uname -a shows:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.12-9-amd64-generic #1 Mon Oct 10 13:27:39 BST 2005 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I think 2.6.12-9-amd64-generic vs. x86_64 will not work in the long term? (Install kernel header/libs/gcc etc.)
But I'm not sure if the alternative takes full atvantage of the processor arch.
