To get Rails, Gems, et al working properly I basically uninstalled the
"official" Ruby support in Breezy and compiled it all from source.  I
downloaded Ruby, compiled and installed, then did the same for Gems.
After that I just used gem <package> to get the bits I needed (like the
mysql library, the sqlite library, etc.).

Using the stuff in the repositories caused too much of a headache.  It
was easier to do it all from source.
