hotplug changes in Dapper?

Hi.
I haven't spent much time on this.... however I've tried two seperate
devices that utilize hotplug and firmware loading with dapper over the
last 2 months, and neither has worked. First up was a Plextor
ConvertX video capture/encoder. I've used it on multiple systems
before and after compiling the drivers, and plugging it in to the usb
port, it would load up fine, you would see the messages in syslog
about the driver and firmware loading.. until I tried the same
proceedure with dapper. The second piece of equipment is a Divico
Fusion HDTV Gold usb tuner. I downloaded the latest dvd drivers and
compiled them, made sure I had the firmware in /lib/firmware, plugged
it in, and nothing...
Well all I get is this:
May 27 23:34:06 localhost kernel: [4319616.114000] hub 1-0:1.0:
over-current change on port 1
May 27 23:34:06 localhost kernel: [4319616.221000] hub 4-0:1.0:
over-current change on port 1
May 27 23:34:07 localhost kernel: [4319616.528000] usb 4-1: new high
speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
May 27 23:34:07 localhost NetworkManager: <debug
info>^I[1148787247.458371] nm_hal_device_added (): New device added
(hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_fe9_d500_noserial').

(hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_fe9_d500_noserial_usbraw').
Its all messages from HAL and networkmanager. I don't get this.
those are about the same messages I got for the plextor when I was
trying that with dapper.
Am I missing some kind of substantial change? Any idea who I can get
either of these devices working with Dapper?
Thanks
