Requirements for Ubuntu

Just saw this on the BBC News page - it details Microsoft's new 'Vista'
minimum requirements for installation.
This could be a trigger for more Linux installations when XP SP2 finally
becomes unsupported (it was supported in the first place?) by Microsoft, and
they literally force their customers to 'upgrade' to the new Windows.

As people find out there's a fully usable desktop (for most of the users out
there who don't need to play Unreal Death Ultimate Shooter Pro 2006
Unleashed or run complex Word/Excel macros) out there for free (or with
others, the cost of shipping and packaging/corporate support), I think
people who NEED a supported operating system might just (maybe not all of
the users in this group, but a percentage) say 'Ok then. Let's have a look
at this Linux thing'.

*Minimum* *Recommended* *Processor* 800MHz 1GHz 32 or 64 bit *System
Memory* 512MB 1GB *Graphics card* DirectX 9 capable Runs Windows Aero
 *Graphics
Memory* - - 128MB *Free space on Hard Drive* 15GB 15GB *Source: Microsoft*

(I count myself as a geek - a power user - I like to hack around with stuff,
and until recently my fastest machine was a 750MHz machine with 128MB ram
and 32MB video memory. I know a lot of power geeks out there have spec'd up
machines to the MAX, but remember - Linux 'degrades' nicely to older, slower
hardware, and is still used as such even today)

And Ubuntu Dapper's requirements?

Well, I don't know if they've been released yet, but I can pretty much place
my house on the fact that it will be less than these released today.

Discuss. ;-)
