I think we're looking at a couple different problems:

First off, the Ubuntu kernel uses initrd which to the layman means that
it can load modules on boot and shouldn't crap out due to things like
reiserfs.  The drivers for my SATA hard drive are modules as well and
the stock kernel handles that just fine.  What's the error that it
throws as it fails?

Second, to get the kernel source (the Ubuntu way), you need to install
the "linux-source" package.  This'll give you the directory you're
looking for in /usr/src
