386 vs 686 kernel? And uninstall linux-image-2.6.15-21-386 removes Linux-386?

I am not been able to install linux-686. I tried,

synaptic
aptitude
apt-get install linux-686
adept

They all get stuck showing a msg:

Waiting for headers

Then after few minutes, I got a fail msg.
