Mythtv on dapper

I am lucky if the front end lasts 8 hours, but the back end does
periodically die for me.  The log file says the database went away,
although mysqld is still running.  Add to that incompatibility (but no
explicit Conflicts) between MythTV 0.18.1 and MySQL 5.0; the latter
adds reserved words that the former uses as unquoted identifiers in
certain tables.

This does not seem specific to Ubuntu; reports I hear from users of
other distros make MythTV sound like nothing I would want to use on
any distro.  Unfortunately, the alternatives all seem worse -- at
least for Hauppage WinPVR family cards.
