/usr/sbin/hibernate, installed by the hibernate package.  highly
recommended. Configuration options are described in
/etc/hibernate/hibernate.conf

I definitely recommend suspend2 for this -- sounds to me like your acpi
suspend/hibernate are not working, so using suspend2 to hibernate will get
you out of that bind.

I'm still looking for help on dual-core suspend-1/suspend-2!  Esp. suspend1
-- I'm unable to compile the nonfree fglrx driver, so self-rolled kernels
are problematic for me right now.
