k3b not burning at set speed

1. A project of 3.7GB seemed to finish writing but stopped responding just
prior to data verification. The progress bar moved so slowly as to make me
wonder if k3b had stopped responding. This was the first burn I'd performed
in about three days, and it was post-reboot, post-today's updates.
2.When k3b started a 'start multisession' project of roughly 3.7GB it was
writing so slowly as to not be finished after 40 minutes. I didn't wait for
verification, but canceled the burn.
3. I rebooted, tried again. 'Start multisession' burned at roughly 1%/second
& verified w/o problems. Verification caused no problem.
4. 'Continue multisession' project of 2.xGB sees a burn rate of 1%/4 seconds
(+/-)... which is 1x, though the burn speed is set to 2x. Verification
started, okay.
Need help. Update applied were:
acpi-support belocs-locales-bin cupsys cupsys-bsd cupsys-client
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good hal initramfs-tools kubuntu-artwork-usplash
kubuntu-default-settings kubuntu-docs libcupsimage2 libcupsys2
libhal-storage1 libhal1 libsmbclient linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-22-386
linux-restricted-modules-common locales lvm-common mdadm samba samba-common
smbclient smbfs sudo udev usplash
...and of those, I would imagine that hal/libhas, udev, & kernel modules may
have been responsible, but not for sure.
Anyone else have a similar issue?
