Converting wide characters to their nearest ASCII equivalents

I'm running rsync right now to copy a lot of MP3s, and it's
choking on filenames containing a 'u' with an umlaut. I'd
like to be able to convert such characters to their nearest
ASCII equivalents -- 'u', in this case. Is there any method
that will do this in general?
