I would suspect its a character set problem. I used to have the same problem with
Midnight Commander -- I had to change shells to urxvt. But FTE doesn't give me any problems.
As to access to /dev/vcsa*, I just changed the permissions. I have no idea whether its a security hole but on my box I am the only user and I'm behind a firewall.
