Using Gparted to restore an outboard USB drive -- how long should this take?

Looking at this, it may be your drive HW, after all.

I'd still wipe the boot block, IF POSSIBLE, then try running the mfgr's
diagnostics.

Should be some free ones on their website, or other free HD diags can be
googled.
