Battery death

My laptop just died a horrible death while I was in the middle of working
on something. I admit it did give me a warning 19 minutes before it
crashed, but nothing just before it died.

Isn't there some way to make sure that an orderly shutdown occurs (maybe
suspending to disk before the crach)? How do I go about getting this to
work.

Thank you.
