no sound when playing WMV files

Another noob here. The steps here solved my problems playing a wmv file
from my file system, but how do I get it working for streaming videos
directly in the browser? Is there a similar fix for mplayer? 



'This page' (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats) mentions
"importing" totem into my browser, but doesn't explain how to do it. I
tried going into Preferences->Downloads->View & Edit Actions and change
the action for wmv files from "play with mplayer plugin" to "Open with
this application" and chosing totem-xine, but it still opens them with
the mplayer plugin. What am I missing here?
