I have a very similar problem; in my case Ubuntu fails to work with the local
DNS Server in my Linksys ADSL2MUE broadband modem. If I add my ISP's static DNS
addresses (following the suggestions in the Ubuntu wiki at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StaticDnsWithDhcp to prepend them and make them persist)
then all works well. My Windows system works fine with the ADSL2MUE, and Ubuntu
works fine with the network at work too. I'd love to know why...
